Authorities have decided to intercept and destroy helium balloons carrying illicit goods from Belarus, its prime minister has warned.
This decision follows after balloons entering Lithuanian airspace forced Vilnius Airport to close multiple times over the past week, including at the weekend, while authorities suspended Belarus border crossings temporarily each time.
Frontier crossing points remain suspended indefinitely following repeated balloon incursions.
According to official declarations, "our nation stands prepared to implement the strictest possible measures during unauthorized aerial intrusions."
Detailing the measures during a briefing, the Prime Minister confirmed military forces were implementing "complete operational protocols" to intercept unauthorized devices.
Regarding frontier restrictions, Ruginiene said diplomats will still be able to travel between the two countries, while European Union nationals and Lithuanian residents retain entry rights, though all other travel remains prohibited.
"This represents our clear message to the neighboring nation stating that asymmetric operations face opposition within our territory, and we'll implement maximum countermeasures to halt these operations," she said.
There has been no immediate response from the neighboring government.
Lithuania plans to consult its allies regarding the aerial device concerns while potentially considering invocation of Nato's Article 4 - a provision enabling alliance discussion on any issue of concern, especially related to its security - she added.
Lithuanian airports were closed three times during holiday periods from balloon incidents from Belarus, affecting 112 flights and more than 16,500 passengers, per transportation authority data.
Earlier this month, several unauthorized objects traversed the border, causing dozens of flight disruptions impacting thousands, per national security agency reports.
This situation represents ongoing challenges: as of 6 October, hundreds of aerial devices documented crossing borders from Belarus this year, per government spokesperson comments, while 966 were recorded last year.
Additional aviation facilities - covering northern and central European sites - experienced similar aerial disruptions, with unauthorized drone observations, over past months.
