Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to stay indoors as powerful gusts lash the region.

Powerful gales hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 homes without power and forced authorities to halt in excess of 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

The winds are impacting the complete southern region and southern parts of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in central regions encompassing these major districts.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and prepare for further utility disruptions.

Broad Damage and Emergency Response

This outage seems to be impacting households mostly in the southern region, while officials state that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Regional news have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

Within the capital, a person was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was swept into moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel in and out of the city have been suspended due to the gusts, and various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to support disaster response efforts.
