Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event took place on the third circuit when safety workers were observed on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events

"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the FIA

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and placed on standby to enter the track and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was displayed in that zone"

"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
