During a latest trip to Japan's capital, former US President Trump together with Japan's new Prime Minister Takaichi exchanged friendly praise and pledged to enhance the already robust bilateral relations.
Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and congratulated her on assuming the role of the nation's inaugural woman prime minister. During their talks at the capital's official venue, the former president expressed confidence that Takaichi would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.
The prime minister, who is a protégée of former Prime Minister Abe, applauded his efforts to resolve global conflicts and according to sources vowed to nominate Trump for the prestigious award.
The two nations revealed a series of joint initiatives in sectors such as power, AI, and critical minerals. Japan-based firms are exploring investments of up to $400 billion in the US.
Additionally, Tokyo had previously committed $550bn in strategic American projects, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to obtain relief from the former president's import duties.
These actions are viewed as possibly reducing any future demands from Trump for Tokyo to boost its defense spending. Takaichi responded to this by promising to accelerate plans to increase defense spending to two percent of GDP.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump told Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.
The meeting highlights the continuing significance of the American-Japanese alliance and paves the way for additional collaboration on economic, defense, and foreign policy areas.
